- “This post is sponsored by American Cancer Society.“

As most of you regular Terra Talking readers know, we are big birthday fans around here. When the opportunity arose for me to have the American Cancer Society sponsor a post regarding their Happy Birthday campaign for cancer awareness, I was overjoyed at the opportunity. These commercials/videos brought tears to my eyes from the first time I saw them.
Of course we celebrate birthdays for our friends and family members – but how often do we really understand, and value, and APPRECIATE what each birthday represents? Having just celebrated a milestone birthday for Kendall, the subject is fresh on my mind. Having known far too many kids whose birthdays will never again mean candles and cake and party favors, but instead flowers on a gravestone and balloons released into the sky – these things have given me a perspective on birthdays far beyond what I ever thought I would know. And while I am so glad for the awareness the ACS is bringing to our country about the horrid ravages of cancer – I can’t help but hope that someday, somehow, the same awareness will surround mitochondrial disease. That someday and somehow we would be closer to a cure for these kids (and adults) who want simply to see their next birthday.
So to everyone – whether your birthday is next week or 11 months from now – Happy Birthday. Celebrate and cherish each and every DAY – for the life you have been blessed to live those 24 hours. Count your blessings and get back up and do it again.
Happy Birthday to you – all of you.
Terra.
